About Manaslu Circut Trek

star

Why Manaslu? Is manaslu the right trek for you?

  • The Manaslu Circuit is not as populated or connected, allowing travelers to experience the real and raw adventure of trekking of the Himalayas and forge a deeper connection with nature.
  •  The glory of the world's 8th tallest peak, Mount Manaslu (8163m), as you trek through the stunning landscapes surrounding it
  • The Manaslu Region has controlled tourism to maintain its ecological and cultural integrity. This means that trekkers need a special permit to explore the area, adding to the sense of exclusivity of the Manaslu trekking experience,
  • Challenge yourself with the crossing of Larkya La Pass (5160m), standing at 5160 meters. The pass not only tests your trekking skills but also rewards you with its spectacular view,
  • Discover the serene beauty of Birendra Lake, a tranquil spot surrounded by the majestic Himalayas, providing a perfect place for reflection during the Manaslu Circuit Trek 12 days itinerary,
  • Visit remote monasteries like Nubri and Pungyen, where you can witness traditional Buddhist rituals and architecture in a less touristy setting,
  • Accommodation along the trek will be in lodges and tea houses operated by local families. This offers an opportunity for trekkers to engage with the local community and experience their hospitality firsthand,

Manaslu Circuit Trek 12 Days

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a 12-day high-altitude loop around Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s 8th highest peak, in Nepal’s Himalayas. As a restricted area trek, it requires special permits and an experienced guide, making it far less crowded than more popular routes. The trek crosses the dramatic Larkya La Pass (5,160 m) and passes by sacred sites like Birendra Lake and Pungyen Monastery, offering panoramic views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Annapurna II and others. Along the way you’ll trek through the Budhi Gandaki valley, lush rhododendron forests and remote Gurung and Tibetan-Buddhist villages. This 12-day itinerary (Kathmandu → Machha Khola → Dharapani) is moderately challenging and requires good fitness, but rewards you with cultural immersion and truly off-the-beaten-path Himalayan scenery. Below is our comprehensive guide: route overview, highlights, permits, seasonal tips, and FAQs to help European and North American trekkers plan this epic adventure (masterhimalaya.com)(ntb.gov.np).

Why Choose the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

  • Uncrowded & Authentic: The Manaslu Circuit is among Nepal’s most secluded trails, as the government limits tourism in the region. Independent trekkers are not allowed groups must have at least 2 people and a registered guide. This controlled access means you’ll enjoy quiet paths and authentic Himalayan culture rather than bustling tea-house crowds. Local Gurung and Tibetan-Buddhist villagers maintain centuries old traditions (life here is “akin to time travel”), so you’ll experience genuine hospitality and rituals off the tourist track (ntb.gov.np).
  • Spectacular Mountain Views: You literally circle 8,163 m Mt. Manaslu, plus side peaks like Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Annapurna II and others. Key viewpoints include the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 m, the trek’s highest point, where you gain a 360° vista of snow capped peaks. Other highlights are panoramic viewpoints above villages like Namrung and Lho, and fields of prayer flags against the Himalayan backdrop.
  • Hidden Gems - Lakes & Monasteries: Unlike many longer treks, the Manaslu Circuit includes special side trips. Trek up to Birendra Lake (Birendra Tal); a serene glacial lake in Samagaon valley and visit 800 year old Pungyen (Pyungyen) Monastery or even push to Manaslu Base Camp on acclimatization days. Ancient monasteries like Ribung and Pungyen are tucked in this region. The peaceful Birendra Lake, framed by peaks, is a perfect reflection spot often skipped on busier routes.
  • Eco-rich Wilderness: The trek lies within the Manaslu Conservation Area (and part of the Annapurna Conservation Area near the end). This protected region harbors diverse wildlife, 33 species of mammals (including elusive snow leopards, Himalayan tahr and musk deer) and 110 bird species. Trekking through rhododendron and pine forests, you may spot blue sheep on cliffs or the occasional Himalayan pheasant. Birds, butterflies and high altitude flora (1500+ flowering species) add natural charm (ntb.gov.np).
  • Thrilling Adventure: Covering roughly 177 km in 12 days, the loop is strenuous but well-paced. Every day involves 5-7 hours of hiking through varied terrain, river gorges, terraced fields, moraines and rocky passes. The crossing of Larkya La (5,160 m) on Day 10 is an unforgettable climax, often called the most dramatic pass in the Himalayas. The rugged nature of the trail (long days, high altitude) means trekkers should be fit and ready for an adventure. Master Himalaya provides experienced guides who handle all logistics and safety.
  • Ideal Seasons – December to April: Nepal’s trekking season peaks in spring and autumn. For the Manaslu Circuit, Spring (March-May) and Autumn (Sept-Nov) offer the best weather and views. In spring the rhododendrons bloom and the air is fresh after winter. Autumn (especially October-November) brings dry, clear skies (and Nepali festivals). We’ve optimized this itinerary for late winter through early spring (Feb-Apr), avoiding the monsoon and the coldest months, so trekkers from Europe/North America can use holiday time (e.g. spring break) for this adventure. For example, “best trek Nepal December-April” is targeted by noting that late autumn through spring avoids monsoon rains while spring brings blooming valleys. (Note: December-January are cold and can leave the high pass snowy; check with Master Himalaya about conditions if considering winter trekking).(ntb.gov.np)

Permits, Visa & Preparation

  • Permits: You must have a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP), plus the standard Manaslu Conservation Area (MCAP) and Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) permits. These are processed through Nepali agencies only, you cannot trek independently. At least two trekkers traveling together with a licensed guide are required. (For 2025, the MRAP fee is about US$100 for the first week in autumn, $75 in winter/spring; MCAP and ACAP are ~$30 each.) All permits are arranged by Master Himalaya on your behalf.
  • Guide & Porters: A licensed guide is mandatory in the Manaslu region. Master Himalaya provides an experienced guide (and can arrange porters if needed). Local guides are knowledgeable about altitude, culture and emergency protocols. Solo trekking is not allowed by law, but small groups from Europe/North America (e.g. 2-6 people) easily meet the requirement.
  • Visa: Citizens of Europe, North America, Australia and most countries can get a Nepal tourist visa on arrival (at KTM airport or major land borders). You can apply online in advance or pay $30-40 for a 15-day visa on arrival. A 15-day visa covers the 12-day trek comfortably. (NB: You need a valid visa to obtain the trekking permits.)
  • Weather & Clothing: Pack warm, layered clothing. Even in spring, nights and the pass day are very cold. Include a down jacket, thermal layers, gloves, hat, and good trekking boots. Rain jacket/pants are essential if trekking shoulder seasons. Sunglasses, sunblock and water purification tablets are recommended. Master Himalaya provides a detailed gear list and can help arrange rentals in Kathmandu.
  • Fitness & Altitude: This trek is rated moderate to strenuous. You should be in good shape (regular cardio or hiking preparation) and capable of walking 6-8 hours a day on uneven terrain. Acclimatization days (like Day 7) are built into the itinerary to help adapt. Symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea) should be taken seriously. Drink plenty of water, ascend slowly, and inform your guide of any problems. Master Himalaya provides a first aid kit and can coordinate emergency evacuation if needed.
  • Insurance: Comprehensive trekking insurance is strongly recommended. It should cover helicopter evacuation at >5,000 m and emergency medical care. This protects against unpredictable mountain health risks.
  • Click Here for a complete guide before you plan a trek in Nepal.

Best Time to Trek

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are prime seasons . In spring, valleys burst with blooming rhododendrons and clear mountain views. In autumn, skies are typically very clear after monsoon and Nepali festivals (Dashain/Tihar in Oct/Nov) add local color. Master Himalaya’s 12-day schedule is ideal for trekking in late winter through spring 2025 (Feb-Apr), taking advantage of dry trails and avoiding the June-August monsoon and the coldest mid-winter. That said, December-January are extremely cold and snowfall can block Larkya La; trekkers should generally avoid deep winter.(ntb.gov.np)

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The 12-day Manaslu Circuit is considered challenging. Daily hikes are long (6-9 hours), and the altitude reaches over 5,000 m at Larkya La. Trekkers need a good fitness level and stamina. Proper acclimatization (built in rest day in Samagaon) is essential. The trail involves steep ascents/descents, but there are no technical climbs (rope use, etc.). Many seasoned trekkers say it’s harder than Annapurna Circuit but easier than Everest Three Passes.

What permits are required?

You need a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (only available via agencies, Nepal requires groups of ≥2 with a guide) and the standard Manaslu Conservation Area (MCAP) and Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) permits. Master Himalaya handles all permit processing. You cannot trek Manaslu solo; special permission enforces group/guide.

When is the best time to do this trek?

Spring (March-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) are ideal. We recommend late winter through early spring (Feb-Apr) for mild weather and stable trails. The route sees snow on Larkya La in winter, so trekking from late autumn to spring avoids the monsoon. “Best trek Nepal December-April” considerations mean daylight is slightly shorter in Dec-Jan, but after January it rapidly improves.

Do I need a guide?

Yes. The Manaslu region is a restricted area. By Nepali law, trekkers must go in organized groups with licensed guides. The guide also provides safety, local knowledge and takes care of permits. Master Himalaya’s guides are experienced in this region. (Porters are optional and can be hired.)

What gear is needed?

You’ll need standard Himalayan trek gear: waterproof hiking boots, trekking poles, layered clothing (thermal base layers, fleece/down jacket), warm hat and gloves for cold nights, rain gear, sunglasses and sunscreen. A sturdy 50L+ backpack and a good sleeping bag (for -10°C or lower) are important. Detailed gear checklist is provided by Master Himalaya in advance.

How many kilometers is the Manaslu Circuit?

The full loop is about 177 km (110 miles) of trekking over 12 days. This includes walking to and from villages and the high pass. It’s a circular 12-day route (Kathmandu-Maccha Khola-Jagat-Samdo-Larkya La-Bimthang-Dharapani-Kathmandu) covering rugged Himalayan terrain.

What are the highlights?

Highlights include the panoramic crossing of Larkya La, spiritual sites like Pungyen and Ribung Gompas, the alpine turquoise Birendra Lake, and lush mountain villages of the Budhi Gandaki valley. You’ll experience Tibetan-Buddhist culture (monasteries, prayer flags) and enjoy unusual wildlife sightings in the Manaslu Conservation Area (ntb.gov.np).

Can I trek Manaslu in December or during Spring break 2025?

Trekking in late winter (Dec-Jan) is possible but very cold; many tea houses limit services then. From February onward, conditions improve significantly. Spring (Mar-Apr) is excellent for the trek. If considering December, note that Larkya Pass often has heavy snow and may require snow gear. Always check current conditions and have flexibility in your schedule.

What about insurance?

High-altitude trekking has risks (altitude sickness, weather, injuries). Comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment is essential. Don’t wait until arrival; sort insurance before you fly to Kathmandu.

Major attraction in Manaslu circuit trek

Manaslu Base camp

Manaslu base camp is one of the major attractions in the Manaslu circuit trek. on day seven of the Manaslu Circuit trek 12 days itinerary, there is an acclimatization day at  Samagoun. On this day we have an optional day activity to go to the Manaslu base camp or the Birendra lake. if the weather is clear that day it will be best to go to the Manaslu base camp. but if the weather is foggy, going to the Birendra Lake will be best.

Manaslu base camp is located at an altitude of 4,800 m which is about 15,742 ft and offers a spectacular view of Mount Manaslu and surrounding peaks like Nagdi Chuli, Himchuli, and Baudha. Trekkers can also experience nearby glaciers.

Is Manaslu base camp and Manaslu circuit trek the same?

Yes, the route is the same until you reach Samagaon, from there we head 5 hours towards south to the base camp and return to Smagaon to spend the night. It is best to cross the Larkey la pass and return rather than to return down from Samagqaon. There is also a short 9-Days Manaslu Circuit Trek, CLICK HERE to see more.

Larkey la pass

Larkey la pass is the ultimate goal of trekkers trekking to Masnslu circuit trek. The point where you cross the Manaslu Conservation Area and enter Annapurna Conservation Area. Larkey la pass is about 5160 m. This is one of the longest pass in the Himalaya of Nepal. Manaslu circuit trek is also called as Larkey la pass trek.Several peak like Kang guru, Himchuli, Annapurna II, are visible from here.

One of the most challenging and difficult day during the Manaslu circuit trek is Day 10 of the Itinerary where you trek from Bimthang to Dharmasala via Larkey la pass trek. The chance of getting high altitude sickness is common.

After having morning breakfast, guide will ask you to carry your lunch, because you cannot find any thing except snow before reaching Bimthang. He will also be equipped with all the necessary first aid kit to prevent the sickness. if you see the day 9 of the itinerary (one day before the Larkey la pass) where you trek from Samdo to Dharamsala, the camp is short, in about a distance of 4 hours time which is to support the trekking day of Larke la pass.

Which is the most difficult pass Thorong la pass or the Larkey la pass?

Larkey la pass is difficult among the two because Larkey la pass is the longest pass and trekkers need to walk long in the high altitude area where as in Thorong la pass, trekkers will trek to the top and descend immediately.

Activities during acclimatization in Samagaon

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most breathtaking and less-crowded treks, offering stunning views of the Himalayas, rich cultural experiences, and diverse landscapes. One of the key stops on this trek is Samagaon, a picturesque village located at an altitude of 3,530 meters (11,581 feet). Acclimatization in Samagaon is crucial to avoid altitude sickness and ensure a safe and enjoyable trek. While your body adjusts to the altitude, there are plenty of activities to keep you engaged and make the most of your time in this beautiful village.

1. Explore the Village of Samagaon

Samagaon itself is a traditional Tibetan-influenced village with a rich cultural heritage. Take a leisurely walk through the village to observe the daily life of the locals. You’ll see stone houses, prayer flags, and chortens (Buddhist shrines). Interact with the friendly villagers and learn about their customs, traditions, and way of life. Don’t forget to visit the local monastery to gain insight into the spiritual practices of the region.

2. Visit Birendra Tal (Lake)

A short hike from Samagaon will take you to Birendra Tal (Lake), a stunning glacial lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The purely fresh waters of the lake reflect the majestic Manaslu Mountain, making it a perfect spot for photography and relaxation. The hike to the lake is relatively easy and serves as a great way to stretch your legs while acclimatizing.

3. Hike to Pungyen Gompa

Pungyen Gompa is an ancient monastery located about 2-3 hours from Samagaon. You can also visit Pungyen Gompa a day earlier while trekking from Shyala to Samagaon. The hike to the monastery offers panoramic views of Manaslu and the surrounding peaks. The monastery itself is a peaceful place to meditate and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. The trail is moderately challenging, making it an ideal acclimatization hike.

4. Day Trip to Manaslu Base Camp

For those feeling adventurous and well acclimatized, a day trip to Manaslu Base Camp is a rewarding experience. The hike takes you closer to the towering Manaslu (8,163 meters), the eighth-highest mountain in the world. The trail offers breathtaking views of glaciers, moraines, and the Himalayan landscape. This hike is more strenuous, so it’s important to assess your physical condition before attempting it.

5. Enjoy the Views of Manaslu and Surrounding Peaks

Samagaon offers some of the best views of Mount Manaslu and its neighboring peaks. Spend some time simply soaking in the beauty of the Himalayas. The sight of the sun rising or setting over the snow-capped mountains is truly magical and a highlight of the trek.

6. Learn About Local Culture and Cuisine

Use your time in Samagaon to immerse yourself in the local culture. Visit the village’s tea houses and try traditional Tibetan dishes like thukpa (noodle soup), tsampa (roasted barley flour), and butter tea. Engaging with the locals and learning about their way of life adds a unique dimension to your trekking experience.

7. Rest and Hydrate

Acclimatization is not just about staying active; it’s also about giving your body time to rest and adjust. Spend some time relaxing in your tea house, reading a book, or journaling about your trekking experiences. Make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as this helps your body cope with the altitude.

8. Photography and Nature Observation

Samagaon is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. Capture the stunning landscapes, vibrant prayer flags, and unique flora and fauna of the region. Keep an eye out for wildlife like the Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and various bird species.

9. Attend a Buddhist Prayer Ceremony

If you’re lucky, you might have the opportunity to witness or participate in a Buddhist prayer ceremony at the local monastery. These ceremonies are deeply spiritual and provide a glimpse into the religious practices of the Tibetan Buddhist community.

10. Prepare for the Next Leg of Your Trek

Use your time in Samagaon to prepare for the next stage of your trek, which involves crossing the challenging Larkya La Pass (5,106 meters). Check your gear, pack wisely, and ensure you’re physically and mentally ready for the ascent.

Personal Costs while Trekking the Manaslu Circuit

While trekkers often focus on major expenses like permits, guides, and accommodation, there are several smaller, personal costs that can add up during the journey. Being aware of these costs can help travelers better plan and budget for a hassle-free experience.

Snacks and Beverage:

During the trek, you’ll find the cost of snacks and beverages increases as you ascend to higher altitude. Basic items such as chocolate bars, chips and energy drinks can cost significantly more in areas like Samagaun or Dharmasala compared to Kathmandu. Hence, we always recommend taking enough energy bars and necessary snacks with you, while also being mindful of the weight you carry.

Similarly, a simple bottle of water can cost NPR 50 in lower regions but may rise to NPR 900 at higher elevations. Carrying purification tablets or a reusable water bottle with a filter can help reduce their expenses. As part of our trekking packages, we provide tea or coffee three times a day with breakfast, lunch, and dinner to keep you energized throughout the journey. However, it’s important to note that hard drinks are not recommended during the trek. As they can negatively impact the health and acclimatization of trekkers.

Hot Showers:
After a long day of trekking, a hot shower can be a luxury, but it comes with a price. The cost of a hot bucket shower ranges from NPR 300 to NPR 700, depending on the altitude and availability of fuel  sources like gas or firewood. If you wish to take a hot shower at any point during the trek, simply inform your guide, who will arrange it for you. Payment for the service is usually required before checkout.

We advise trekkers to avoid taking showers after reaching Samagaun until Bhimtang due to the cold temperatures and high altitude. Instead, using wet wipes can help maintain hygiene and save money, ensuring a more comfortable trekking experience.

Charging electronic devices:

Electricity is a precious commodity in the Manaslu region, and many tea houses charge trekkers for using their charging facilities. In the lower elevations, charging might be free; however, as you ascend to higher altitudes likes Dharmasala, the cost to charge a phone or camera can range from NPR 200 to NPR 900 per device. Additionally, charging times can be limited due to high demand and restricted power availability from solar or hydro sources.

To manage these expenses effectively, we recommend carrying a solar charger or a high-capacity power bank, ensuring that you stay connected without incurring additional costs. It’s also a good idea to conserve battery life by switching devices to airplane mode, or minimizing usage during the day.

Wifi and connectivity:

Staying connected to friends and family can be a challenge on the Manaslu Circuit, and it often comes with additional costs. Tea houses along the route offer Wifi services for a fee, typically ranging from NPR 500 to NPR 1000, depending on the remoteness of the location. Mobile network coverage is another consideration; the Namaste (NTC) Sim card provides the most reliable service in the region and can be conveniently purchased at the airport with a passport and photo at an affordable price. However, other providers  like Ncell currently lack proper coverage along the trekking route. At the time of writing this blog, Ncell is in the process of building towers in the region, and coverage is expected to improve in the near future.

While internet access is available up to Sando, trekkers should be aware that from Dharmasala to Bhimtang, there is no mobile signal or Wifi connectivity. To stay in touch with loved ones, it's best to inform them about these connectivity gaps in advance and plan communication accordingly.

Personal hygiene and toiletries:
Items such as toilet paper, wet wipes, shampoos, toothpaste, and soaps are not always provided at tea houses and must be purchased along the way. A single roll of toilet paper can cost NPR 200 or more at higher altitudes, while other hygiene products may also see a significant price hike. Bringing a sufficient supply from Kathmandu can save both money and inconvenience.

Additionally, carrying biodegradable wet wipes and eco-friendly toiletries is highly recommended to minimize environmental impact along the trail. Keeping personal hygiene in check is crucial for a comfortable trekking experience, especially in high-altitude areas where water sources may be limited or frozen.

Tips and Gratuities:
Tipping is a common practice in Nepal, and trekkers are encouraged to show appreciation for the hard work to guides, porters, and driving staff. The recommended tipping amount varies depending on the trek duration and group size but generally ranges from NPR 800- NPR 1500 per day for guides, and NPR 500 to NPR 800 per day for porters. Planning for gratuities in advance can help ensure you express gratitude without financial stress during the trek. Generally, the tipping is done after end of the trek

Souvenirs and handicrafts:

The Manaslu region is rich in cultural heritage, and local artisans often sell beautiful handicrafts, including handmade jewelry, woolen garments, and traditional Tibetan artifacts. On the way to Namrung, you can find the apple farm from where you can purchase local dried apples you may want to try.
